ODBC over internet

I have an application that needs to run in several remote sites and tie in to a central SQL server. The application is written in Access modules, and communicates through an ODBC connection. I have attempted to set up an ODBC connection to the SQL server, but have noticed a significant lag in my SQL queries. I was wondering if there wewre any tips for setting up an ODBC connection via Internet? Thanks.
