I am trying to setup a connection on a windows XP machine to access a database on a SQL 2000 server. The server is setup as a workgroup (two servers in that workgoup) that resides in an NT domain that is part of an AD domain... I am using Win NT authentication.

First, in the ODBC setup, did you check to use the Windows Account?

Next you need to find out what type of authentication your SQL Server login account set for. (Enterprise Manager, expand Security, click on Logins, double click your login, go to the General Tab).

If it's not set for Windows Authentication, you can't use Windows Authentication.

Next issue. Do you have Win XP SP 2 installed? If so, have you opened the firewall to allow TCP Port 1433? That is the default port to SQL Server and SP2 automatically blocks it.

Any reason that is not necessary when accessing with a windows 95 box? Two parts of one application access this database. Some are the old 95 version which uses a 16 bit odbc connection. I'm afaird if I turn that on it wil affect the other users access...

Turn WHAT on?

Windows Authentication for a specific login - without doing that a user can only use SQL Server authentication

Openning Port 1433 - you are only openning it on the XP machine's firewall, it won't affect anything else.
