ODBC Error inner / outer join clause

If i try to link two tables with a left outer join clause i get the following error message:

ODBC error: [MERANT][ODBC Sybase driver][SQL Server] The table 'test' is an inner member of an outer join clause. this is not allowed if the table participates in a regular join clause ?

What i'm doing wrong. The equals / right outer join are working fine but unfortunately don't bring the results i need !!!!!!
