ODBC connection over wan

I am needing to setup and odbc connection over a wan link. It's from between two servers connected by vpn over a T1 link. I've never setup an ODBC connection over a wan link is there anything I need to watch for or be careful of?

Firewalls.

Make sure the sql server port (by default 1433) has not been blocked.
