I'm using 8.5. Working on an SQL database via a VPN. I created a ODBC connection. At this point, I'm able to flawlessly run the report however when it gets to the other side, and run the user is asked to select a database. I need to have it work cleanly here and there...please advise, many thanks in advance for all attempts to help!

Your user will need to create the same ODBC connection and DSN to the same data source.

Before I had to reinstall Crystal, I was able to choose my database, verify it, run the report without any prompts, and when the user on the other side ran the program they weren't asked anything either and the report knew where to go...that is the setup I'm again looking for.

THat would only happen if they had a ODBC connection with the same name already loaded onto their PC.

As Chelseatech says you will need to create an ODBC connection on the users PC with the same name pointing to the database.
