Octel 250 tape drive query?

I have a 4GB SCSI Octel 250 tape drive that is FAULTY.
Can I replace it with a 12GB SCSI 12GB Octel 250 tape drive. If so are there any special requirements?

I think that the 12 gig drive only works on Rel 3.

You must be at 2.04 or higher to use the DDs-3 12 gig tape drive
