Good Day All,

I've recently started a new job, and the organization uses an OCTEL system for Voicemail.

I was left 0 information on it except that the key to the front panel was hanging on a cork board in the wiring closet.

I am not sure what flavor it is, and I was not told what extension is the system admin mailbox.

It is a rectangular shaped box, with "OCTEL" on the front and a key hole. On the back there are 2 serial connections (among other connections), The first is not connected to anything, the second is connected to comm1 on a PC sitting on top of the OCTEL. Out through the front of the Octel another Cable comes out and connects to comm2.

This second connection is a Db25 to 9 cable and connects to the SP1 (System Terminal) Port on the OCTEL.

OK...enough PREAMBLE I think....

Issue: When I connect to the machine, and open Procomm, I am able to connect out of Comm1 on the system to the serial port on the BACK of the OCTEL. This gives me a password prompt for VMXWorks. I was able to get into this system. But it doesn't seem to be the one I want for adding mailbox's and resetting passwords.

When I try to use procomm with the same port settings, but through Comm2 which connects to the System Terminal port, I just get a blinking cursor. No password, and I was hoping this would be the actual OCTEL interface.

Can anyone start to point me in the right direction to at least get a password prompt for the OCTEL instead of VMXWorks? I am happy to investigate more and provide answers to questions a long the way, and once I can get in, I can read the manual and figure it out...but I'm at a loss right now for what to do.

Thanks!

Steve

Hi FLWPG

You will see that this voice mail server "OCTEL 200" - though an elder model - runs stable an almost maintenance free...

My comments:
The COM port (SP1 System Terminal Port) on the front of the OCTEL 200/300 - when the door is opened - is the maintenance port.
It gives you the same access as the higher COM port (also DP25)on the back of the OCTEL mail server, marked with J1.
You can run it with a speed of 9600 (maybe 19200) baud, 7 bits/Even/1 stopbit.
You will be prompted for a password in an @-prompt.
If this password is unknown to you you can not proceed any longer.
The lower J2 COM port is for integration to your telephone system.
What system are you using as telphony system?

If your PROCOMM application shows that you currently are in "VMXWorks" mode showing a %-prompt, you will get out of this by pressing ".." (2 points).
You shuld now be in the @-promt.

If the password of the system is unknown to you, you should set passwords for the 3 levels existing.
@pass m xxxxxx / maintenance level
@pass a yyyyyy / administration level
@pass r zzzzzz / reporting level (print commands)

So set the passwords if the current ones are unknown to you.
Passwords cannot be printed out so remember them!

I will post a link with my information in the next post.
I have some PDF documents that show a bit of the hardware.

Thanks much doktor!

I will be trying this tomorrow, which may end a week of stumbling around in the dark.

If the "2 points" i.e. ".." does not take you out of the "VMXWorks" mode, then try wit 2 x ESCape...

Yes, but through a different method...
Turns out I just had to hit enter a few times before the Octel password prompt came up.

I wasn't able to exit VMXWorks on the other serial port,
but at least I have a way in and can work with it now.

Thanks again.

Let me know if you need more help.
In this forum I have written several threads about how to add/delete a user, resetting of user passwords and how to build a menu function (Press 1 for Sales, Press 2 for service). So the tools for your tasks on OCTEL should be ready...
