Octel 200/300 reboot 1

Hello. I have an Octel 200/300 email server. Over the weekend, the UPS failed and the Octel Box lost power. I restored power, but the Octel only appears to have come up partially. One card has a green light and the other 4 have red and green lights. When I connect a laptop to the SP1 port, I get the start screen with info about the device (serial num etc). I get the @ prompt and hit enter. Then I get the password prompt. I type in the password and get the response "Wait for System Initialization". I hit enter and get back to the Password prompt. I am stuck in a loop. How can I get this VM server to finish initialization?

What boards have red lights?
If it is the VCU, then the HDD could be gone...

It just hangs there.

The lights are as follows:
300-6039-004 CPU Green
300-6001-004 VCU Red & Green
300-6049-001 LAN Red & Green

At a vendor's suggestion, we replaced the power supply to no avail.

Does it look like a problem with the VCU, or the VCU.IM file, or do you think it is the Hard Drive? The hard drive does seem to load some .IM files during boot process.

do you think it is the Hard Drive" -> Yes, I am sorry to say.

Since 1993, where I began installing OCTEL 200/300's it has been the only HW component to fail, seen apart form the power supply.

By the way, the VCU is the HDD controller, and it is stable as h..., so best guess: HDD.

Thank you for your help, Herr Doktor.

Well, believe it or not, this time it actually was the the VCU! I got my hands on a replacement 300-6001-004 VCU card. We popped it in and held our collective breath. It booted up and all of the cards lit green. The system is up and tested.

Would be nice to have if the HDD fails.

It is possible to format standard floppies to OCTEL format.
But if you make back-up from the OCTEL to the floppy it will format to the correct "format" itself.

Names, Greetings, PDL's -> standard DOS format.

But if you want to make a system configuration back-up, you ned to send this command to the new floppy disk in the drive:
@CRE CFG
Also ALLWAYS remember to make at logged textfile (.txt) with all the data from

.list all (or .l all)

Thanks! I will do that. The thing is, we are updating everything (NEC 2400 and Octel 200) to Cisco VOIP in September. I hope the old Octel hangs on for another couple of months!

It will. Some of my system have been running since 1994 w/o reboot or faults.
