Hi All,

I remember this being discussed a few months ago, but the search doesn't seem to like me - as usual.

I've recently bought a WMP54G but it doesn't obtain an IP address from my WRT54G router. I can use WINIPCFG to get an IP address but this _shouldn't_ be necessary in an ideal world. Is there a workaround or should I just set a fixed IP and live with it?

I've got latest firmware in router and latest driver for WMP54G (the one supplied with the card was spectacularly useless).

Is the adapter set to mixed mode?
Do you have MAC filtering enabled on the router?
Is the adapter speed set to Auto?
Are there any firewalls on the client?
Are you using an antivirus program with a firewall, such as Pc-Illan?
Do you have other LAN adapters in the desktop?

If the router is set to g-only as well, that is the source of the problem.

At least with current firmware, set the router to Mixed, and the adapter at Auto transmission rate. You can leave it at g-only.

The current firmware for the wrt54g is 1.41.2 dated 9/22/2003.

The current for the WMP54G is from late July.

Thanks once again.

I'm having a bad morning already. Just noticed that I was fibbing when I said router was in G only, it was actually in mixed. I was forgetting my new laptop has built-in Wireless-B. My excuse is I have a cold and didn't check. Sorry.

Typically, when I went to check settings on PC, Lo and Behold, it obtained an IP address without any problem! GRR!

Is it okay to use the v1.1 firmware on my v1.0 router? I'm guessing yes, but I would prefer some reassurance before I b****r it up.

The newest firmware is for both V.1 and V1.1 of the router.

Thanks once again for your assistance. You have been a great help as always.

A star for your trouble!
