Is it possible to obtain an electronic copy of the MAC address for 200+ IP phones if I have the Serial Number? I really dont want to read them manually from 200 boxes!

Help

you can get a USB barcode scanner hooked up to a PC

what are you trying to accomplish? cause thres a few things you can prob do

I did 600 phones by scanning them off the boxes with a hand-held scanner attached to my PC. It goes faster than you think.

I don't think there's a way to get a copy of the MAC's via the serial numbers...

No there isnt a way from the serial. Get the scanner and you can populate an excel spreadsheet, convert it to a CSV and use the BAT tool

When we did our setup the phones weren't actually allocated to the users until they were placed onto desks. We had profiles loaded via BAT and used the TAPS service to register and assign the correct DN to each phone as it was rolled out. This way we didn't need to have MAC addresses ahead of time.

AdmanOK:

Thanks.
The idea of TAPS & BAT sounds perfect. I've read the section on BAT but not much help. Can you give me an idiots guide AdmanOK? Is it possible to input the Serial Number also when using this method? (Manager wants them recorded in CCM)

You could put the serial numbers in as a Description but there is a better use for that field, User names, etc. I don't know of anywhere else you could put them. CCM will get the serial numbers of the phones when they register and you can pull it off each phone anyway.

Thanks for that pndscm. Good to know I dont need to bother inputting Serial Numbers. Can you give me any help using TAPS & BAT?

I've never used TAPS as it requires CRS to be running. BAT instructions can better be found on Cisco.com. When we are putting in lots of phones, I use BAT with BAT-generated dummy MAC's, then as the Tech's install the phones they make note of who gets which MAC addres, then they edit the phone in CCM changing the dummy MAC with the proper MAC.
I've also done over 900 phones with bar code scanner. I doubt there is a lot of time savings either way. We subscribe every phone with Personal Address Book and Fast Dials so we have to touch every phone anyway. Changing the MAC while your there isn't much time difference than scanning them in with BC scanner.

TAPS is sweet. Great for bulk or even single/day to day phone installs, especially when using PoE switch blades/ports. IP Phone installs couldn't be easier

Just a point of clarification... CallManager does NOT record the serial number of the phone. There are several "undocumented and unsupported" methods of getting this information, but none of them are particularly easy. I would recommend keeping a database/spreadsheet seperate from CCM that cross references serials to MAC addresses. As pndscm said; there is not really any field in CCM to put it in.

CCM keeps the serial numbers on the IP phone web page. Go to the Phone Configuration page and click on the IP address of the registered phone. The Serial Number is on the Device Information page. There is no 'list' but it is available. If you need a searchable list, AdmanOK's suggestion is a good one unless you like to copy & paste and have LOADS of time.

Simon,

Can you send it to RICHB1971@YAHOO.COM
