Hello all,
I am trying to uninstall a program from a computer running Windows 2000. However, when I go to Control Panel and hit Add/Remove Programs, the outline of the window pops up along with the above error and some other mumbo jumbo. To be precise, the error is: Object does not support property or method res:// appwiz.cpl/default.hta ln 75

So of course I can't solve my real problem which is uninstalling this program. How do I get my Add/Remove Programs window to start functioning properly? Any suggestions welcome!
:)

The advice I have found:

It may be that the appwiz.cpl control panel is incorrectly
registered. Try the following:

Start / Run / regsvr32 appwiz.cpl

If that doesn't work make sure that the appwiz.cpl file actually exists on your drive, usually in the system folder. If it is there and the above didn't work, extract the file from your installation CD with Start / Run / sfc ... 'extract one file from the installation disk'

It is odd though. As one commentor mentioned:

It is said to be a problem on processing JScript or DHTML objects from HTA(HTML Application).

Suspcious line 75 is "preload.js" included in APPWIZ.CPL:
75: _idPlaces.SetExecButton("idConfig", bExecOCMgr);
76: g_docAll.idColPlaces.width = g_docAll.idPlaces.offsetWidth;

There is no line 75 in "default.hta". :-(

In general, these types of errors occur from IE security settings (HTA is an IE application). However, AFAIK, HTA is not confined by security settings. Then you have to suspect whether IE components are missing or corrupted.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions. I did part one however I don't understand what you mean by 'Start / Run / sfc'.What exactly should I be extracting? I have also seen on the net suggestions regarding repairing the installation of Windows 2000. Have you heard of this and does it work? I don't want to take any steps that may cause more problems than solutions. Hope to hear from you soon.

Run sfc without parameters. You can also use the Expand utility under the Recovery Console. The intention was to replace a possibly faulty appwiz.cpl

Nothing helped. I even tried copying appwiz.cpl from my personal PC to the PC with the problem (even though the version was slightly older). No result.

Now a coworker is telling me that I need to install Windows fresh because as far as they know Windows Recovery Console doesn't work. I cannot believe this. There has to be some other way. How do I re-instate the appwiz.cpl file? Step by step instructions would be appreciated. :)

Do:

Start, Run, sfc /Scannow

Have the Cd handy. I am not sure why you were told the Recovery Console does not work; the sfc results can be viewed later in Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.

I gave up and installed Windows fresh. Thanks anyway ;-)

That will do it too, and is not quite as painful as many believe.

Be certain you spend some time and the MS Update site afterwards, as your Service Packs and Hotfixes are gone.

If there are any XP workstations at your site, borrow a copy of MSCONFIG.EXE, as one of its many benefits is that it allow you to Expand and replace a file directly without having to use Recovery Console. It works fine under Win2k.

Cool. Thanks again for all your tips. Till the next problem take care. :)
