O97 Photo Editor under Windows 2000 JPEG error. HELP!!!!

We have Office 97 installed on a Windows 2000 network.

Different people did the O97 install, and some did typical, some did custom.

Those machines that have the Photo Editor of O97 installed now cannot open JPEG files. Anytime a JPEG is opened, Photo Editor pops up, and the error "No file format informationation found in registrty is displayed."

Individual users cannot change their "Open file type with..." settings, so Photo Editor is the default.

Does anybody have knowledge of a way to correct this error? By the way, uninstalling O97 does not correct the problem. You cannot get rid of Photo Editor registry setting without wiping the registry clean. This is more complicated that we really want to deal with.

Can you change it in My Computer or Explorer.

its slightly different for each Operating System 9x, NT or 2 Grand,
But the list of files and what opens them can be found in either place
And can be changed as long as the Program you want to change it to is already installed.

You have to find the extension .jpg edit what program it opens jpg with.

This is some times not easy to find.

Also you did mention registry. As you probably know the information is in the registry. I would recommend you use Explorer or My Computer

You can only change the File Types setting, from either My 'Puter or Explorer when logged in as administrator, then when you log in as a user, the settings are not changed.

I even tried giving a user administrative rights, but he still could not change the settings.

So isn't this a one time fix. Are'nt we talking about one setting??
Log in as Admin. and fix it then log out
and lah de dah.

It is fixed when logged in as admin, but once the admin logs out, and a user logs in, it is back to Photo Editor. Users cannot change the setting, and when admin changes it, it only stays set for admin.

I only wish it were so simple...

The solution of this problem is described in MS Knowledge Base Article Q260151.
At startup Photo Editor tries to create some registry keys and entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/ Shared Tools/Graphics Filters.
This fails because of missing permissions. Even if the entries exist write permissions are necessary.
The described solution goes too far. I fixed the problem by granting the following permissions to the "users" group:
Set Value
Create Subkey

Hope it will work.
