O2Micro OZ6912 CardBus Controller problem

Ok, this is the second time I'm asking for help... I have an HP Pavilion ze4220 laptop with Win XP Pro installed.

When I turn on the laptop with the wireless NIC plugged in, it doesn't work unless I do one of two things...

1. Unplug the NIC card and plug it back in. (Trying not to have to do this as the slot is getting worn out and not taking the NIC card as tight as it used to.)

2. Go to Device Manager and disable the O2Micro OZ6912 CardBus Controller and then enable it.

The card is a Linksys WPC54G ver. 7.1 with the latest drivers from Linksys. It is listed separately from the Cardbus Controller as "Unknown Device" when not working and "Wireless-G Notebook Adapter" when working in Device Manager.

So, basically, it seems that the O2Micro OZ6912 CardBus Controller is the problem at startup because when I disable it and re-enable it, the NIC works fine.

This is the best explanation I can think of. I hope this time around someone can actually help me please!

BIOS >> Boot Options >> Remove any bootable device other than CD-ROM (1st priority) and HDD (2nd priority).

Sounds like an initialisation issue to me. For some reason the NIC card is not initialed at the time XP is interrogating it. Possible reasons that come to mind are.

Wrong or outdated drivers
Dirty or otherwise poor contacts
The card is beginning to fail

So check at the manufacturers website that you have the latest drivers. Running a drive defrag and a registry cleaner might not be a bad idea either. Auslogics do a free one that is quite good. If not fixed after that I'm not sure you can do much in practise about the last two. You might need to live with this one.

If you feel its worth it you could re-install the machine from scratch? But that would be overkill I think and still might not solve the issue.

This all started happening when I did a full reinstall to XP Pro from XP Home. Like I said in my first message..."The card is a Linksys WPC54G ver. 7.1 with the latest drivers from Linksys." Finding the driver for the Cardbus is the problem. I currently have pcmcia.sys as the driver, but don't know where to find support for it. O2Micro website does not have any downloads.

Have you tried Googling "O2Micro OZ6912 driver"?

I did and got a dell and Cnet download on those exact model/part number. Do you have all the latest SP's installed because usually the reason the manufacturer doesnt have the driver is because Windows will pick it up. Would update my Windows, and if after all the updates, Update the Driver via Windows Device Manager. If that doesnt work I would download one off one of the other websites. Driverguide has it too if your a member.

I am a Driverguide member. There are about 50 downloads for that driver. Which is the correct one? My Windows is always updated to the latest, and I haven't seen any new driver the last time I checked (yesterday). Appreciate the help!

Since it depends on the key words as to exactly what drivers you see, for instance my search pulled up 648 drivers(just searched O2Micro OZ6912 and I would have started with the first one), I would go buy the one specifically for XP/XP Pro that has a decent to good rating.

I used this site for a couple years and didnt run into any virus downloads, some of the drivers didnt work as specified but at least there is a multitude to try. :)

I guess I'll try the most highest rated and see. The CNet download just takes you to Windows Update DrBOb.

I installed that one DrBOb. Still the same problem. Dev Mgr says the device is working properly, but the "Unknown Device" (NIC card)reads PCMCIA MTD-0002 still and have to do what I originally posted to get it working. I do have the latest Linksys drivers installed as well. Guess I'm stuck with this. I appreciate the help though.

on that unknown device, right click on it and go to properties, then under Details, there should be a Hardware ID, note it down and paste it here in the thread...

e.g. VEN_8086&DEV_1010&SUBSYS_0987

also pull the card, then physically inspect the bus, there is a possibility that two pins (usually on the outer side of the pin rows), that may be bent...

also take a look into the BIOS Setuo, and see if there is a SoundBlaster emulation section, and then turn it off... update the BIOS to the latest...

also take a look:

Certain R2 PC cards are incorrectly enumerated as memory cards

nope that does not help, unfortunately... but do read the rest of my statement above. and check it out...

basically what it boils down to is either a configuration problem, or there is a hardware defect on the PCMIA connector...

That Microsoft Article directs me to obtain Service Pack 3 which I already have. Thanks anyways!

Personally I would live with this one. Having said that, if you really want to get to the bottom of it I would image the HDD so I could return to the current situation quickly and then I would wipe the drive ( a reformat should do it) and re-install Windows and see if the problem persists or goes away. If it goes away I would note exactly which drivers were being used and then image that system and restore the problem system and see if I could install the same drivers that seemed to be working.
