Was attempting to install a new 5.1 server into our existing tree. During the GUI, I browsed to the location of the new container and logged in using my admin user (trustee of the container with full rights) and got an error that NDS failed to install -618 error. This is the first time I have seen this. The server was locked and when I rebooted it I am taken to DOS. The server object was created in the tree but nothing else. No volume objects were created. I'm leary of just deleting the server object and starting over. #1: Is this my only option at this point? #2: Can I use the save server name and ID number?

A couple of questions:

1. Can you bring the server up if you invoke server from the c:\nwserver directory?

2. If you can, does the server know who it is and show up in a "display servers" from another server?

If the server comes up and knows who and where it is, try removing NDS from the server. If you can do that, then you are home free. Remove the NDS, wipe the server and start over.

If you can't get the server up, I would suggest reading the following Novell tids: #10010922, 10011467, 10011465, 10023679, 10010933 to clean up your DS before starting over. You need to be sure that DS is cleaned up before re-doing it. At that point, you can use the same name and ID without a problem. If DS isn't cleaned, you wil have a number of problems now and in the future.

When you re-do, I would suggest knowing the context and entering it manually rather than using the browse. The server frequently will hang on browsing until it can fully communicate with the tree.

Take your time, clean the DS thoroughly and don't browse the tree and you should be fine. Good luck.
