First what I have:

Microsoft XP Pro 5.1
AMD Athalon XP 2100 1.7Ghz
AwardModular BIOS v6.0
768mb 256DDR RAM
Direct X 9.0c
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900XT 128mb with driver 6.14.0010.7801
C-Media Wave Device with driver 5.12
Compaq MV920 19" Monitor

Second, my problem:

It would appear that no matter what drivers I install (4.X - latest) on my Video Card I have this lack of brightness. In order for me to see anything, pictures or Video, I have to tweak the Brightness and the Gamma and the Contrast to get a clear immage. I had to tweak all these then save them in my profile so that everytime I login on my PC I would get a nice clear Desktop. The only thing that cannot be fixed is Windows Media Player (WMP). When a video file plays it is very dark. I have to crank up the brightness and thus I get a very poor quality Video, but if I don't do that then I cannot see anything.

The worst is when I try to view a Video from a web page. Sometimes there are no brightness options so I have to copy the properties of the Video's link then resubmitt it into my WMP to play iut so that I can tweak the Tool's brightness to be able to see the Video.

Anyone know what might be the issue here? This is a very good card, only 1 year old but this has been going on since three months after I bought it and yes I could have taken it back but I simply lived with it.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

This a complex issue that plagues most graphics cards. Nvidia and ATI as well. When applications are played in windowed or full-screen modes, the look-up tables (gamma, contrast and brightness) can be loaded with different tables. But the mechanism of loading these tables does not seem to work properly. It may have to do with the interface between DirectX and the graphics drivers, but the end result is that these values are defaulted instead of being loaded with preset tables. If your monitor happens to work fine with the defgault values you will not see the problem. If your monitor needs more brightness and gamma that usual, you will feel the problem jsut every time you are switching applications between the desktop, the 3D engine, or the video windows.
I guess that not enough people complain about it, since they are playing a deaf ear since years. The process to file complaints with these people is so complex that I can understand that so few people spend time to go through it.
All I can suggest to you, is first to use the default values of the card, then adjust the monitor contrast and brightness to the best you can... After that try to tweak the card settings.
ATI provides Hot Keys to work around the problem. It works sometimes, sometimes not. Nvidia must have similar utilities too.

Thanks Felixc
