Here's one for you wireless gurus to consider:
We've integrated a 3rd-party nurse call system with Nortel WLAN handsets (2212s) and have had decent success. The nurse call system can send text messages to the Nortel WLAN handsets held by caregivers. The caregivers can view the messages and respond back to the patient bedsides via the nurse call equipment.
Everything works pretty nicely unless the 2212 user is simultaneously off-hook on a phone call when a text message is received. In this scenario, the existing phone call proceeds normally, there is a call waiting-like tone notifying the caregivers that a message has arrived, but there is no easily apparent way to view the message!
The following snippet from Nortel sales literature indicates that this should be possible, but what we are looking for is the “how”:
Alerts received during voice calls
Text message alerts can be received during an active WLAN Handset call. A discreet audio tone heard only by the message recipient signals the caregiver of an incoming text message. The caregiver can read the message without disconnecting the call. This allows caregivers the ability to make and receive phone calls without missing important system alerts.
I’ve read the WLAN I&C NTP cover-to-cover and while invaluable for setting up the 2245s/2246, it doesn’t contain much about text messaging the sets. I think only someone who has tried this integration with Nortel sets might know a way to read the text message while on a call. Nothing we have tried has worked, yet. The text messages are not stored on the phone inbox. I know the firmware info if interested. We have posed this question to Nortel and I'm sure they'll respond. I hoped this great forum might help us get a quick solution. We may try the same app with some 6140s, but for now we wanted to roll this out to the 2212s we have deployed. Thanks!
