I built this computer and have never had any problems with it up until this point. I was editing the registry to stop AOL from starting all those annoying programs on startup. All I did was delete a few entries that had AOL in it. Also, I tried overclocking a little, but it wouldn't boot so I cleared CMOS and left it at default settings. Now, system takes over a minute to boot, used to be about 10 seconds, none of my games will run, they all ask to enter cd while it's in the drive. It won't retrieve my local settings and on logon gives about 4 files that are missing or unreadable and am told to run chkdsk. Finally, I can't download any files using Internet Explorer and computer is running unusually slow. (There's also 1,000 other small things not really worth mentioning, e.g. buttons won't show up in help and support center and system won't let me explore CDs.)
Here are the things I've tried to do to correct these: ran mcafee, no viruses, cleared CMOS, did nothing, impossible to run system restore, all I get is dialog box saying to restart, to no avail, won't let me reinstall windows because my disk is service pack 1a and I installed service pack 2, won't boot in safe mode and when I run chkdsk, all I get is "File record segment xxxxxx is unreadable". Is there anything else I can do besides reformatting my hard drive? I would really like to keep my data.
