Numbers on button indiactor LCD strips?

Ill explain as best as i can.

Took apart a m7310 to paint the shell and when i took the board out and set it down on the work bench im not sure what possessed me other than my inner child but i pushed on the LCD indicator strip and the arrows lit up... but numbers did as well. In the middle of the strip. Tried to snap a pic but wasn't able to.

Now my question is.. Why are there numbers on the indicator strip? my many years of using Norstar phones i have never seen anything but the arrows on the M7XXX sets? I tried Google but wasn't sure how to search it!

It might have been something planned for implementation at one time and it never got implemented.
I've been working on Norstars since the 1980's and, like you, I've never seen a number ... only the arrows.
