numbering columns

I'm new to this.
I know about the Primary key for id and auto increment in mysql. Although, I'm trying to accomplish just plain old 1,2,3.. numbering of columns using PHP which is submitted to the database. So, every time the table is cleared of info, the numbering starts over. I would use this numbering along side the unique id auto-increment numbering...
