Number of instances of a character in a string

Hi all
I'm trying to find out if there is a way of counting the number of times a particular character appears in an xml field using xslt. Basically I'm storing a section of the filestructure and I would like to know how many levels there are (ie the number of occurances of "\" within the path)

any ideas?
