Hello everyone,

I am looking to find out some information on how to design a VLAN network, and the possible effects of poor design. I have heard that for a mixed protocol (IP and IPX) network, you should limit the number of workable devices (wks, switches, routers and hubs) to 254 per VLAN. Is this correct? Also, supposing I broke this rule and deployed 500 hosts to that VLAN, what would be the problems I would see?

Thanks you all for your time,

Daniel,

It's 200 for a mixed network per segment... not per VLAN..

I have had this *rule* broken a good many times.. you just need to pay attention to such like broadcast traffic, SAP traffic etc.. there are many variables involved. Is the *segment* really the switchplane of a high end switch rated at 3-6Gbps? is it a bunch of hubs? and so on.. common sense says that you have a nice FAST backplane you can easily *break* the rule.. but if you have a bunch of hubs, you might want to reconsider..
