Hi,

I am trying to create a fourth oracle database (version 8.1.7) on my HP-UX 11.0 server.

When i am in svrmgrl, and i try and startup nomount specifying the new parameter file, I get an error saying that there is an end of file communication error.

I am 95% sure it is a unix parameter that needs increasing.

Does anyone know what that parameter might be?

Joe

There are many kernel parameters that you need to adjust for Oracle in HP-UX. It could be the maxuproc parm. This parameter is based on the nproc parameter. It also could be one of the semaphone parms. Check Oracle's installation doc, which should be on the Oracle CDs, for their minimum kernel recommendations and adjust upward if you think your system can handle it. You could also try metalink.oracle.com to get a list of kernel parameters. You have to register, but I think certain parts are free.

It also could be that you've reached the limit of your memory? Add up the total SGA sizes of all the databases on the system to see if you have reached the limit of your memory.

Finally, check out this thread on the Oracle 8/8i Tek-Tips forum: thread186-579749. There are lots of good suggestions in there, including checking the alert log to see what other error messages may have been thrown out by Oracle.

HP-UX has a 1.75GB memory limit - you can you use memory windows to get around this.

With oracle 8+, add the database name to /etc/services.windows (whilst the database is shutdown), and restart the database.

If not using Oracle - check setmemwindow / getmemwindow
