***Null value vs Empty String***

Please help settle a rather heated argument. Which would take up less space in a database table, a Null value, or an Empty String (ie. ' ')?

I forget if there's an actual difference or not. (There may be, but I doubt it.) The reason I forget is that the decision to use NULLs or not generally has nothing to do with the space consumed/not consumed by Nulls. You might find this old thread interesting background reading:
