ntvdm.exe virus?

A relative of mine is having a virus problem it seems. Here are the details from what he told me over the phone because he's over 2 hours away from me. He's ready to just format but he wants to try some other things first so he doesn't lose some pictures and e-mails.

There are a huge amount of ntvdm windows opeing up on his computer. I was talking to him for about 10 minutes and over 400 opened. I searched what this exe does and it's 16 bit virtual machine used to run 16 bit programs. It seems a virus or some type of malware is opening these things to no end. He's not real computer savvy so I can't really try some advanced things with him.

Any of you run into this before? I didn't find much in a quick search.

I don'r know for sure if a virus is causing the errors, but it may also be a Windows problem. The article talks about some repair procedures you can try. Goo luck!
