ntpdate waiting 300 seconds before trying again

Look to see if you have a file /etc/inet/ntp.conf. This is the configuration file for ntp (Network Time Protocol). If this file is present, the daemon for ntp will start. On clients, the file ntp.conf will just have an entry for the ntp server.
