2 DCs in the domain, after a reboot one now says ntldr missing. If i use recovery console to try and copy ntldr and ntdetect.com to c:\ it says Access is denied.
When you login after starting the recovery console are you using an account with admin permissions?
If worse comes to worse you can try a repair installation of Windows which will leave all your settings and programs intact. Im pretty sure 2003 has that feature like XP does.
Yep, logging in to recovery console with as administrator which has hadmin permissions. I can copy files to c:\winnt just not to c:\.
No floppy disk, I can confirm by using recovery console that ntldr and ntdetect.com aren't there.
I made myself boot disk and using recovery console I can see the boot.ini, so I made a boot.ini on the floppy that matches the servers boot.ini, it boots to a screen with just a mouse cursor.
I actually think now that something is horribly wrong with the drives/raid array in the server. If I try a repair it can't copy any files to the local drive, ie when doing the text portion of the setup it comes up and says 'Can't copy bootvid.dll' if I escape past this i get the same error on the next file. I've used a different CD in case my install CD was broken but no joy.
I may cut my losses now and write this server off. I assume I'll have to clean up AD now, any offers on the best way to do this?
Oops, sorry. Kenadamms is my fellow admin, we've been working together on the problem together, he started the thread off and I've now carried on looking at the problem while he's gone on holiday.
I've cut my losses and cleaned up the metadata now, gonna rebuild that server and whack it back it as a DC again.
Once again apologies for replying to a thread started by my colleague, very bad form and I have slapped myself on the wrist.
