Hello i have a ntlworld internet account via 56k dial up connectio but it doesnt connect at 56k it connects at 44.0k and it is really slow but my friends who lives a couples of streets away can get 56k i was wondering could i boost my connection or will i have to ring ntl up
Please help
Thanks

I have a 56k modem on one of my computers at home, and 44k to 48k is usually what I get. Same with everyone I know here in the Midwestern US. If your friend is getting 56k on a 56k modem he/she is lucky. Are you in Great Britain? Might be different there, I don't know.
One thing you can do is to go into your software setting and indicate your modem is the next higher speed (if memory serves, it is 114k). Sometimes that will get you a little bit more. Other than that, try making sure you have plenty of free RAM and plenty of free disk space. Speed is not only dependent on modem speed, but also on system efficiency.
