We have a 2003 Server with a large NTFS volume. (about 3 TB in size). The othe day about 70 percent of the NTFS rights disappeared.

Anything that lost rights still had "Administrators and System" with rights, but the other groups were missing.

In some areas the directory lost rights, but if you drilled down in the directory the files still had their rights

In other areas the directory maintained it's rights but the files lost all of their rights (except for Administrators and System).

CHKDSK did not find any errors
Nothing unusual in the Event Viewer.

Was a CHKDSK run before you noticed the permission disappearing. Check this article from KBAlertz;

913034 The Chkdsk.exe utility incorrectly identifies and resets security descriptors in Windows Server 2003

Hope this helps. Regards

Terry
