NTFS Drive Failure

I have a machine with an old 40GB HD. I know, I know, I should have backed it up. BIOS recognizes the drive but the Windows OS doesn't and neither does DOS. What can I do to get my data. The HD still seems to be powering up and spinning. It is an NTFS partition. PLEASE HELP. I promise to image my drives in the future.
