Am I hosed?
I am getting this error in the event log:

Event ID: 441
NTDS(244) File system error 23 during IO on database C:\WINNT\NTDS\ntds.dit. Please restore the database from a previous backup.

I don't have a backup of that file, and this is the only DC in the domain. Is there somewhere /somehow I can recreate this file? Anybody seen this before? It is screwing up AD as well.

That is the main AD database file. You will probably have to boot into AD restore mode and then run the NTDSUTIL command when you get a prompt then type in info this will tell you where your backup AD is. dsadata.bak is the backup file for the AD stored in c:\winnt\NTDS. This is all I know but it should give you a start.

Anybody had this error before and tried creating a new W2K server, re-creating the AD database similar to the corrupt one and replace the corrupt one with the new one?
I am thinking about giving this a shot...
Chikn
What is the dsadata.bak file and will I be able to pull info from that file to re-create the NTDS.dit?
Thanks

I myself have never had a corrupt AD database. From what I understand however this is an actual backup file of the databse that can be restored using the AD recovery console.

If I were you I would go to GOOGLE.COM and do a search on ntds.dit. I believe there is a backup copy of ntds.dit on your server. Also check out Q240362 and maybe Q305500. You should always make an ERP diskette for your server with the backup command and save the system state. Good luck.
