Something was using 100% of my CPU on Windows XP Pro. In Task Manager it shows as SVCHOST.EXE. I installed Process Explorer from Sysinternals. When I view the svchost.exe process in Process Explorer and then go to Properties and view threads it shows: ntdll.dll!RtlPcToFileHeader+0x352 using 100% CPU.

Has anyone seen this before?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

Brian

So it seems that this thread is associated with Automatic Updates. I disabled the Automatic Update service and then rebooted and I cannot reproduce the problem with this thread and the CPU usage. Now I need to figure out how to fix the Automatic Updates. When I restart the service and try to manually update...I get the following error: Access Denied.

If anyone can help with this that would be great!

Thanks

Brian

Start with a permissions change. Restore the XP Defaults:
If no joy, check for registry entries blocking you:

For Windows XP Pro:

Start/Run/gpedit.msc. User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update. In the right pane, double click, Remove access to all Windows Update Features and set it to disabled.

For Windows XP Home Edition:

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\WindowsUpdate

Locate the value in the right pane called DisableWindowsUpdateAccess. Double click this entry and change the value to 0 (zero) or right click it and select Delete.
