Hi, hoping some one can help... Its Xp home SP2, thats so infected with malware and crap that a reinstall is about the only fix. The comp has a recovery cd (I think the manufact is Image)..anyways Boot from the cd, xp starts to copy core files over and it sticks on ntdll.dll, with the following error "stop c0000221 unknown hard error systemroot\system32\ntdll.dll"

says the version on the comp is older than version on the cd, because this is a protected file you cant copy or overwrite the file...not a problem, I put a new hdd in the machine and ran the setup again...same thing, it doesnt like the ntdll.dll file.

Ive googled it and tryed a number of things that people have suggested, nothing works... In the end I found a microsoft document on it, their suggestion.....REINSTALL THE OS!!!!... well thats what Im trying to do.... any ideas out there?

I'd try wiping the drive first with the hard drive manufacturer's utility software. That way you can also check the drive for errors. If the drive is clean, you shouldn't have any more problems with the install.

What ServicePack version is on the installed in the current faulty Windows, is it a later version than that which is in the Recovery CD?

Yes it is a later version, the cd was SP1, the system has SP2 on it

You must make the Recovery CD, SP2, or the Windows Install, SP1. Or clean install and format instead of a repair.

Slipstreaming may not apply (without difficulty) to Recovery CD's.

Thats what Im trying to do.. a clean install... I just ran a wipe utility over the hdd, booted with the recovery cd, same thing..it loads the files and then comes up with another blue screen that says nothing except for "stop c0000221 unknown hard error systemroot\system32\ntdll.dll"

If the drive is totally wiped, how can this error be appearing?, the only thing I can think of is a problem with either the recovery cd itself or may the cd drive.

Are there hidden recovery partitions on the drive (or should there be one that has been wiped in error), you never know whats actually there nowadays until you look.

Get an old 9x Startup floppy and run Fdisk (option 4, I think) and see what's on the drive as to the number of partitions.

What type of machine is it, do you still have the manual?

You could try the machine's Support Techs to see if they can help.

the harddrive wipe removed everything from the drive. I put another hdd on the machine and got exactly the same error,so im running it again in another cd drive, and get the same thing..

Its a "quality computer" that was purchased thru Frys I think...

I'll have to look and see if I can get a replacement recovery cd from them

SOLUTION:.. Remove the cd rom drive and replace it with the oldest, slowest, crappiest, dirtiest cd rom you can find and try again... That what I did and the install took.

Go figure????..... thanks for all the suggestions..Im not sure if this is just conincidence but Im not going to knock it to much..

Was that desperation or inspiration, or just perspiration?
