ntbackup vs backuprunner

Hello,
Is ntbackup the same thing as backup runner? Backup runner being the thing integrated into the server management page. As far as I know backuprunner calls on ntbackup. Is there a way for my ntbackup jobs to send email notifications the same way that backuprunner jobs do?
