Hi,

I had to copy data last night and i decided do a backup & restore and I used NTBackup rather then my 3rd party backup product.

On Win2k3 I backed up my data and restored it to a Win2k server. After the restore I got quite a few of the warnings below but after checking the file on the source & target the file looked the same in size & content. Can anybody explaine this warning to me and am I to worry about it !

Warning: Unable to set the short 8.3 name for "File location\file name".
Reason: The parameter is incorrect.

Have you looked in the registry of the target machine for the below:

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem

Data Type: Dword // Value Name: NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation
Setting for Value Data: [0 = Enabled / 1 = Disabled]

Thanks for the reg keys but my question is should I worry about the warning I got when I restored my data !

Have you been able to open/utilize those files, if so, I wouldn't worry about it. I'm just wondering if the warnings came up do to the registry setting, and if they did, maybe change the setting to avoid the warnings in the future.

If you are unable to open/utilize those files, maybe check the registry for the setting of 1, then you might not be allowed to create those entries. Back it off and see what happens...
