Using ntbackup. Scheduled to run at 9pm. The backup runs however on an adhoc basis the backup does not complete.
The time stamp on the log file is 9:33pm. The log file is blank. Logging is set to full.

The cmd line used with the schedular is

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\daily.bks" /P "4mm DDS" /v:yes /hc:eek:n /m normal /j "DAILY" /l:f /UM

I have the same setup on another server and the same thing occurs, backup starts at 11pm, fails and time stamp on the log file is 11:33pm. Log file is blank.

Both server are using different model DDS drives.

I cannot find any failures on either server.

Seems obscure but has anybody come across this before ?

Regards

Darragh

I have the same intermittent backup problems on my W2k and w2k3 servers. What I notice is that it stays on mounting tape but just stalls there. Sometimes it will run fine for a whole and suddenly stop working... Don't know why... It does however force me to check my backup logs everyday except that I manage over a dozen servers which can be a bit complicated and each server is spread out at customer locations...

Found a Microsoft KB for 2003, there may be an equivalent for 2000. KB document is 841187. Call MS for hotfix.

Thanks DarraghFitzpatrick, I'll give it a try when I get a chance. I just check the backups and they worked for the last 4 days and messed up yesterday.
