I had a customer ask me if the following is possible.
They have a BCM50 RLS 3.0 that the hard drive went out on. They also have a 50 that is out of service with RLS 5 and it has the NT9T4242E6 (Multi Image drive in it). Can they take the NT9T4242E6 drive and put it in the rls 3.0 system and just load their back-up and everything go back to like it was? I know if they had a new or even a lower rls loaded on the NT9T4242E6 drive they could but I was not sure if they already had a higher rls loaded on the drive it would work. The reason they want to stay with the 3.0 system is because of the codes that are on it.

No you can't .
You will have to purchase an upgrade keycode from rel3 to rel 5. Inorder to use the rel 5 hard drive.
You would be better to get a new multi image hd and install it as a rel 3
This way you can use the existing lic file and backup

The one they have is the new one, it's that they have already loaded it on another unit as rls 5. But from what I can tell I think your right once you set the drive up as a higher rls you can not go backwards you can only go higher with codes of course.

thanks firebird, but I went ahead and talked them into just upgrading to 5.0.

Does the upgrade process update firmeware on the systemboard is this why you can't swap out drives?

I hade a 2.0 system that the drive failed in and swaped out with another 3.0 drive and it worked and booted. I can't speak to a 3 to a 5 though? but the 3 worked fine.

Oh and just a FYI the backup from a 3.0 will not work with a 6.0 system. learned the bad way on this one.

Firebirdscrambler: I'm in need of an R1 or R3 image if you could assist? Would be much appreciated!
