I have some slightly elderly Solo 2550 laptops that were delivered with W98 on them. I have got NT4 running on them with the aid of the drivers I found on the Support CD version 4.1. However the setup in the modem folder does not achieve the desired result. It installs the built-in modem onto COM3 but thereafter nothing can drive it. COM3 isn't even visible to HyperTerm. I tried installing it on COM1 but then HyperTerm says it is disconnected.
Is there anyone out there who has got this working?

Thank you but I have indeed tried there. I've even tried with Gateway Technical Support. The modem is the on-board optional modem chip and the only info in the spec is "V90 56 KB data/fax modem (Lucent chipset)". Gateway's own setup routine on their System CD calls it an "Actiontec 56K V90 Modem" and appears to install it but it doesn't work afterwards!
