NT4 inheritance permission question

I have a simple question that I hope you guys can help.

I am wondering on a NT4 Server, will the sharing/security permissions set on a folder be inherited to subfolders if

1) the subfolder is existing.

2) the subfolder is newly created without any rights explicitly assigned.

Sharing is a different issue altogether, but NTFS security permissions set on a folder will be applied to:

1) existing subfolders if the "replace permissions on subdirectories" checkbox is checked.

2) new subfolders that are created after the permissions on the parent directory have been set. New folders always inherit their parent folder's permissions, as do files.
