NT4.0 Server Patch distubution to Win2k, and XP Clients

Hi Folks,

Looking to push out patch updates to my win2k, and XP clients. I know it can be done with SMS, and win2k server, but can I build a script or use a nt4.0 server to push this out say when they loggin?

I can build a win2k03 server offline, can I build the package, and copy to the user's profile?

Maybe i'm way of base here, but would like to simplify some of this patching crap that is happening all too often.
Going to a full win2k domain is not an option, and we don't have sms.

Any help would be great.
