We are building a new server.....Can I put two servers(PDC's) on the same wire(network)???? How can I get the new one in-line with the Old PDC in Place????....When I set the new one up, I had to make it a PDC in Setup! will I crash the network if I do???????

Help!!!!!

Jeff

You can have two physically I think, BUT you can only have ONE PDC PER DOMAIN....

PDC 1 can be part of DOMAIN1
but PDC 2 cant be on DOMAIN1.

What is the result you are try to attain by having two PDCs?

Maybe you need a BDC?

I understand that you can only have 1 PDC per domain....But how can I get my stuff off, other than (Tape back-up), .... from one server to the other.

The server in is in line now is a PDC.....the new server that I am setting up, I had to set up as a PDC during set-up, So how can I transfer my Data????? from the Old to New server.

I if you make a trust relationship betwween the two DOMAINS you can transfer across the wired.

Why didnt you set the new server up as a BDC. THen you could have promoted it to PDC when you took the old PDC offline.?

Are you tryin to have two DOMAINS.

Is the new PDC replacing the old PDC? IF so you have a problem, because the new PDC isnt part of the old PDC's domain.

Hey...I didn't know that!!!!!!.....Ok We do not have much on the New PDC, Nothing but all the User Names and Local Groups....is there a way to save the user names and Local Groups?????? so we could wipe the New PDC out and make It a BDC?

The Trust between the two Domains is the way we where thinking about going....Never done that.....

No we where not trying to make two domains.....just putting a new Sever in and trying to get the data off the old PDC.

So my questions are:
1. Can I save my User names and Local Groups?
2. How easy is it to Make a Trust?

Thanks for your hepl!!!

Jeff

If all you have on the new box is the user groups, I would rebuild as BDC. When it joins the domain all the SAM data will be synched from the old PDC to the new BDC. That's what the BDC is for. So any user names you have on PDC will be automatically transferred.

Then you promote the BDC to PDC. Much easier than going with trusts between domains - if all you are looking to do is get a new PDC online

Yup poly is right. I wasnt sure of your reasoning behind thewo PDCs.

Since you are not trying to have two domains, this is what you should do:

Reformat the new Server as BDC on the same domain as the old one. (Remember the old PDC must be up and running)

The BDC will synch with the old PDC and get all the accounts and names.

Then, just move your files that your wanted to keep over the wire as you would normally.

If you're gonna take the old PDC offline line, u can do so. Just promote the BDC to become a PDC.
