Quick question - I want to perform an "inplace" upgrade to our exisiting PDC. My question is after the upgrade is complete can the settings be altered i.e domain name, DNS, IP. Or does the domain have to all be 2003 before this is possible or is it not possible - I want to understand why the inplace upgrade option is my preferred option

IMO, migration to a new environment is better. I would create your new AD environment, then migrate your domain to it. This way, you can setup a nice set of security the right way instead of inheriting some leftover crap from NT.
