I have an NT v.4.0 Server (SP6a), PDC, with Exchange v.5.5 (SP4) installed. Small shop, 30 users.

If I do an in-place upgrade, NT v.4.0 to Windows 2000, what will that do to my Exchange v.5.5?

Will it break Exchange? Do I just re-install Exchange? What are the caveats and killers I need to watch out for?

Thank you,

Jim

should work fine. Once 2k in, dcpromo then run the 5.5 ADC to hook it into AD.

As long as Exchange 5.5 is SP3 or higher it will work as before. If it is not at this SP level you will get a message anyway.

Zelandakh is absolutely right. After doing your in place upgrade you need to install the Active Directory Connector (this comes with your Windows2000 CD but if you have the Exchange2000CD the ADC is more efficient and recommended by Microsoft). Setting this ADC up is not as easy as it sounds. You first need to change the LDAP port in Exchange from Port389 to Port390. You need to do this because Active Directory uses Port389 and you will have problems configuring the Connection Agreements for the Active Directory Connector. Here are some articles that should help you understand the Active Directory Connector.

(This article explains how Exchange and Active Directory share same ports)

(This explains how to setup a two-way connection agreement)

Hope this helps.
