My NT4 server is very slow when I log off the administrator, or shut down. It can take upwards of 20 minutes. Any Ideas!

What are the specs of the server ei: disk space, memory...

128Mb, 15Gb HD NTFS 2 Partitions (2GB system, 13 GB for users data, progs etc) 300MB free. Processor is PIII 600Mhz.

How many users hit this server?? From the stats I'm not surprised it runs slow (Depending on my first question). However, 300 MB on a 13 GB partition is not good. How much virtual Memory do you have? Depending on how many users you have, you might want to ( read : should) get some information onto other servers. The processor, and memory are about as much as a lot of workstations have.

Sorry, the 300Mb free is just on the system partition. The users partition has 8Gb free. The swap file is on the user partition.

We don't have many hits to the server, as it is an open access room in a school (only 10 Win98 clients).

Thanks

Richard

Hello richclever,

What is running on the server ?
Are there many services needing to stop before the server shuts down ?
Is it used as a mail server, a print server... ?

Please post more info. S. Gagner

It has around 25 different services running, it is not a print server or a mail server, but it is the proxy server. Apart from that, it is running Norton Anti Virus, and VPN server viewer (so we can see what our students are doing on the internet). That's about it, apart from it being the main file server as well as security provider.

Thanks

Richard

I assume you are logging on with administrator account on the server. To start with, check the size of the profile of this account. If it's bigger than 4-5 MB, try cloning the administrator account and logon with new account and then note the logoff/shutdown time. If this resolves it, delete the old profile of admin and create a new one. Just make sure you don't have any good links etc. in it.

AV software have a history of problems with NT, but in your case I don't think it's Norton causing the trouble. But to be sure, disable it and see the result. Mubashir
