Hi

I need to install nt server 4.0 on Compaq proliant 3000r. I have 3 9.2 gb hard disks. could you some one can tell me the procedure to install the o.s on this machine. I have compaq smartstart and support software CD release 4.40 supplied by compaq. and also i would like to connect an external DLT tape drive for backups and i want to use veritas backup software. please give me as much info as possible and also the links where i can get more info for my issue.

* my main concern first is to install the os using the Compaq smartstart cd.

The easiest way to install NT server 4 on a Compaq server is to use the Smartstart disks supplied with the server. I would recommend that you get the latest version of Smartstart. That is 4.90B. After inserting the Smartstart CD and cold booting the server, follow the on-screen instructions. At the end of the smartstart install you will have a working NT system. You will then need to install the latest Microsoft Servie Packs for NT, currently 6.0A. You can then install the software for the backup software.

hi chris
thanks for ur reply. actually i am not having the latest smartstart cd. the release i have is 4.40. do u know how can i get the latest release.

thanks

sarathi.

If the CD's you require did not come with the server, then you should be able to get them fom your local Compaq supplier. If not look at the Compaq website.

PS. Sorry I took so long to reply I have been on holiday. Us contractors get all the perks!!

Yes! Chris is correct! When you do go through your raid configuration, select the assisted mode, which is the default mode, and you will also need a Profile diskette from Compaq. By selecting your assited mode, you won't have to create your three NT diskettes to build your NT server.
My preference is to always go with the manual mode, this way, I have more control as to what is happening. As an additional suggestions, ensure that you leave the Smarstart CD in the CD bay until you are requested to remove it. It's important that you leave it in the bay as it will create a Compaq system partition that will help you in the future if ever you need to work at the hardware level.

Hope this helps!

A sys admin is never in control if he is always using a GUI. That's why UNIX rules!!!!!!!!
