I have an NT server sp6a that has an onstream tape drive installed in it. I am using the ntbackup utility to back up information to the drive. It can backup files off the NT server no problem. What I want to do is to be able to backup files off a client (internal company backup machine) machine. All the directories on the client machine are shared as Full with no password specified. They can be accessed fine over the network by other machines, etc. When I run the ntbackup utility with the path of the directories on the client machine the ntbackup gives me an error that I don't have permission to access some of the directories on my client machine. Anyone know a way around this or an alternate solution to backing up onto a server from client machines on the LAN.

thanks

I'm no whiz-kid with NTBACKUP, but if memory serves me right your problem is a license issue. NTBACKUP is licensed to work on its own server ONLY and has no ability to backup over the LAN.
NTBACKUP is seriously downscaled BackupExec, so you might want to look into that instead... Good luck!

My suggestion would be to run ntbackup from a batch file and schedule it using the Windows NT Task scheduler - if you dont have it install IE5

In the batch script map the drives to you client machines
net use t: \\clientmachine\sharename

Run this command manually first and check that you can browse the t: OK - if this is OK then

then run the ntbackup command ntbackup "t:" /v /b etc etc

Make sure that when you schedule the job that you use a username that has access to the share you are backing up - there shouldnt be a problem with liscencing as NTBackup doesnt know what its backing up - its just a T: drive

Let me know how you get on! - davidhomer@hotmail.com
