We have a domain with a NT Server 4 PDC and one NT Server 4 BDC. The clients in use are NT Workstation 4 and Windows 2000 Professional.

Recently when adding new users to the domain, these new users are unable to logon to the domain. The following message appears:

"The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name & domain are correct, then type your password again ....."

I tried again the next day, in case of sync delays, but the problem persisted.

It's as if these users don't exist, even though all the details are there in User Manager and are correct.

Existing users can logon to the domain without any problems. The problem only affects newly added users and existing users which have been renamed.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

Do you have the User to change password at next logon ticked? This can cause errors also if you leave the password blank can be a problem.

Is the problem only on the Win2k machines?

New Zealand, a great place to live.

HI.

Is the PDC/BDC synchronization working fine?
Check the Event Viewer on both servers, and look for NETLOGON messages.
Try manual replication from server manager.
Is WINS working properly?
Are both servers in the same network?
Provide more details please...

Also may want to reboot the PDC and BDC to see if that changes anything.

Check your group membership/permissions.

Do your new users have the same group membership as your existing ones?

As your logon rights might be restrictive.

I seem to have the same problem. You might want to look at the tcp/ip settings. If they are set to log on to a workgroup instead of a domain, it could create this problem.

If you go into Account Policies in Yser manager, on the bottom you will see a box that states "Users Must Logon in order to change Password." If this box is checked and a users account is set to "User must change Password at next logon." The server will automatically lock them out as soon as they try to logon. You need to uncheck "Users Must Logon in order to change Password." This willsolve your problem.
