I built an NT Server and I am having a problem connecting to it. everything installed with on problem. What I do notice is that once the severices load the light on the NIC goes out, I can ping the card from the server but not from the NT Workstation. does the IP address I assigned to the card have anything to do with this? why can't the workstation see the server?

Misonet

Obviously, without routing the IP address of the machine needs to be on the same subnet as the server and you need an appropriate subnet mask.

If the light actually goes out, I would suspect that you are not using the correct driver for that card.
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

Of all the things I've lost in life, I miss my mind the most ...

1. If the light on the NIC is off then it's most likely that there's no connectivity on it and I should agree w/MasterRacker - probably related to the drivers; check Event Viewer for any errors and check if the card service(s) started from Control Panel.

2. When you can ping the card's ip address from the machine it's located on - it's a good indicator that tcp/ip stack is loaded correctly - can you ping Workstation from the Server?

3. Workstation seeing the server... Are you talking about ip connection or NetBIOS (see from Network Neighborhood)?

Regards!

MasterRacker:
Both server and W/S are on the same subnet.
the driver is for a 3C509x which i found when I was looking for the driver for the card which is a 3C509B TP, could this be the problem?

Voland:
I can ping the w/s card from the w/s and ping the server card from the w/s.

i can ping the server card from the server but can not ping the w/s from the server, error msg= "Destination host unreachable"
hat driver should work. Check your Event Vieer\wer to see if the driver is failing to load. (IRQ conflict etc.)
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

Of all the things I've lost in life, I miss my mind the most ...

MasterRacker:
Nothing failed to load, That is why i don't understand why the light goes out on the card and i can not ping the card from the w/s.

If the link light goes out then you probably have an IRQ clash or similar. Go into system props page and check out what is on each IRQ. What network card is it and do you have any diag software?

misonet, as I understood from your reply you can ping the server card from the w/s, as well as you can ping the server card from the server itself; but the error comes up when trying to ping w/s card from the server!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't seem to be the case of wrong drivers on the SERVER - there's one-way connectivity.

Regards

I ran winmsd to look at the IRQ's and found that the 3c509 is should to be PCI when it is in an ISA slot. would this be the cause and any suggestions on how to correct this.

If it is an ISA card, go into your CMOS setup and reserve the proper IRQ for ISA to prevent the PCI bus from trying to use it.
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

Of all the things I've lost in life, I miss my mind the most ...
