While I am familiar with w2k server and VPN, I have been asked to put VPN on a NT SBS 4.5 sp6 (not the backoffice version). I have sat at the SBS server hoping it would 'jump out at me', but I can't see it!!!.

I installed RAS, and popped in the install CD to see if there's anything to install but there was no mention of VPN.

Was VPN an optional extra on SBS 4.5, or did I miss it completely?

Im actually tempted to suggest they use one of the XP machines for VPN!!! (or am I being lazy /cheap)

The have a static IP with 1Mbps cable modem connected via ethernet.

Any alternative would be appreciated. Tez

Backups are great but checking if you can restore is more fun.

Once RAS is installed, you need to add the PPTP protocol -- open the network properties applet, click protocols --> add. Select Point to Point Tunneling Protocol. That should get you started.

On a side note, the XP VPN server is a lot easier to setup, but you lose some of the routing abilities.

mhkwood, thanks for the reply, I will get on that over the next few days.

Regarding XP, its only for 2 people to access some data in the evening. Since they use static ips all over the network they should be able to get to the server using the ip address.

Tez,

Did you get it to work? I am implementing a VPN on a NT SBS 4.5 sp6 too. I thought about using XP, but would like to use SBS if possible. I installed PPTP and RRAS, but the proxy server stopped working and kept displaying the default SBS web page for any URL I entered. I tried the VPN from a Win 2K PC, but it wouldn't connect. I'm thinking I am missing a patch or something for Proxy Server or RRAS. I have Proxy Server 2.0 with SP1.

Thanks,
Ernie
