So, the router I am talking about is really a Cisco PIX, I
really don't think it has anything to do with the problem.

Here is the configuration

router port 1 10.0.1.1 mask 255.255.255.0 (all masks same)
router port 2 10.0.2.1
router port 3 10.0.3.1 gateway to Internet

net 1 server 1 10.0.1.2 PDC for server1 domain
pc1 10.0.1.11 win95 workstation

net 2 Server 2 10.0.2.5 PDC for server2 domain
also is WINS server for both nets
also is DNS server for both nets
10.0.2.2 Web Server

Now from the 10.0.1.2 Server I can map a share to 10.0.2.5
I cannot map a share from 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.2.2

I can map a share from 10.0.1.11 to 10.0.2.5
I cannot map a share from 10.0.1.11 to 10.0.2.2

I can map a share from 10.0.2.5 to 10.0.2.2

I checked and believe that WINS is functioning correctly, all computers are listed in the database

server1 domain is configured to browse server2 domain.
I checked and believe that DNS is functioning correctly
all computers are listed in their correct areas and have PTR
records.

NT says Network path not found, 95 says computer or share
name not found. I'm really at the end of my string here.
I do not know how to proceed. everything points to the
fact that I can map to one server and not another, this
perplexes me. everything looks ok, works in theory but I
cannot map a share to 10.0.2.2 from where I need to.

Any ideas on how to proceed or tipe on what I should look
for as to what might be the problem would be a great help.

Ok,
from what I am seeing, you CAN map to the Web server from a machine on it's own segment. You cannot map to a share from another segment.

Let's start with the basics... can you ping the machine by IP address from a machine on network 1 ?
Can you ping the machine by Netbios name from network 1?
Can you ping the machine by DNS name from network 1?
Is the web server in domain 2?

Try mapping a drive to the administrative share on the webserver using the IP address if the ping by IP address was successful.

The command would be:
net use j: \\10.0.2.2\c$ /User:domain2\username

It should then prompt for a password.

One last question. Can you map from the web server to a server on another network segment?
Thanks for all who responded, never mind, nothing like a boring snowey day with nobody in the office to allow a chance to play on the network. after much figgering I discovered that it was the Cisco Pix, Rotten PIX...
