i am unable to connect to the internet with NT. I have 98 installed on my machine as well and can connect to the internet within 98 without a problem. i have installed the modem on com 1 with the nt drivers and have no conflicts.

when i try to dial the internet the error message is "error 692: hardware failure in port or attached device". it seems to not even detect the modem.

if anyone has any suggestions i would luv to hear them.

thanks in advance

The only thing I can think of is to check what com port 98 is using and make sure it's set the same on NT, and obviously make sure that you have the right driver for the modem.

Sometimes, NT will only detect one COM port, even if there are 2 installed on the machine. Use the "ports" applet in control panel to see, and add COM2 if needed. Take the "Default Settings" option to supply IRQ and Port I/O.

Hope this helps X-) Bill

i have already tried adding more than one com port with the default settings and also using my own irq and io settings. all this seems to achieve is failures in event viewer. it detects that com 2 has no serial device attached and as such removes the driver. i have an internal pci modem. it seems as if the modem is installed ok but it is unavailable because i cannot successfully associate it with a com port.

any further suggestions would be appreciated.

Do you have any ISA devices installed in the PC? Bill

no.......there are no isa devices installed in either of my machines. I have two machines...one is running workstation 4 and the other server 4.0. i cannot get either of them to connect to the internet. i seem to be having the same problem on both computers...and that is that the internal modems are installed but not available.

is it possible that the modems are not nt compatible even though i have installed the manufacturers NT device drivers??

On the box of your modem is it written explicit:
Windows NT compatible?

Two years ago I wasted my time with a modem which was not NT compatible. Downloaded the drivers from the manufacturer, nothing doing. Finally in the serial number I found the info that the model I used would only work for 98.

Check out the NT Hardware Compatibility List HCL from Microsoft to be sure. S. van Els
